Our History

Grace Evangelical-Lutheran: Palisades Park, New Jersey; Our church has been proclaiming the gospel and administering the sacraments since 1916 in Palisades Park, NJ, and since 1920 at the Corner of Broad and Homestead Avenues in the Palisades Park. The Apostle Paul tells us in his letter to the Ephesians Christians: you have been saved by grace through faith. This is a fitting verse for a church named Grace Evangelical- Lutheran Church. Truly, we have been blessed by the LORD for the past 90-plus years. Sunday after Sunday, decade after decade, God’s grace has been poured out upon us. This grace is given out in the words of absolution after we have confessed our sins to God. This grace is given out in the holy words of God that are read, taught, and preached. This grace is given out in the waters of holy Baptism and in the bread and wine that are sacramentally united with Christ’s body and blood in the Lord’s Supper.

Our Pastor

The Rev. Peter A. Bauernfeind has been our pastor since 2002.

Our Confession of Faith

God. God is Triune: One God in Three Persons - Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Jesus Christ, the Second Person of the Holy Trinity, born of the Virgin Mary, is both God and Man. Salvation is found only in Jesus Christ. No one comes to the Father, except through Christ.

The law. God tells us in His Word that mankind was created sinless. However, Adam and Eve fell into sin and passed that sin onto their children. Every man and woman born is born into sin. God's law (the Ten Commandments) shows us our sin. God's law always accusses us. No matter how hard we try, we cannot save ourselves through good works or obeying God's law.

The gospel. God also tells us in His Word that He sent the world a savior. Jesus Christ came to earth to be our redeemer. What the law, and we ourselves, could not do, Jesus did. Jesus has purchased the forgiveness of all sins by His death and resurrection. Jesus Christ is the only means of salvation from sin, death, and the devil. What good news!

God's Word. The Scriptures of the Old and New Testaments are the Word of God and the only rule and norm of faith and practice. These Holy Scriptures are the inspired Word of God and are without error.

The Sacraments. Holy Baptism works forgiveness of sins, rescues from death and the devil, and gives eternal life to all who believe this, as the words and promises of God declare in Mark 16,16. The Lord's Supper is the true body and blood of our Lord Jesus Christ under the bread and wine, instituted by Christ Himself for us Christians to eat and to drink. In this Sacrament God gives us forgiveness of sins, life, and salvation through His words "Given and shed for you for the forgiveness of sins."

The Lutheran Confessions. All the confessional books of the Evangelical Lutheran Church are a true and pure statement and exposition of the Word of God. These Lutheran Confessions are the three Ecumenical Creeds (the Apostles', Nicene, and Athanasian), the Unaltered Augsburg Confession, the Apology of the Augsburg Confession, the Schmalkald Articles, the treatise Of the Power and the Primacy of the Pope, the Small Catechism of Luther, the Large Catechism of Luther, and the Formula of Concord.
