Populous Zion; 1. Sunday in Advent
But I call to God and Yahweh will save me. (Psalm 55,16)
The Gospel pericope for the 1. Sunday in Advent is Jesus' triumphal entry into Jerusalem on Palm Sunday. This began Holy Week and the culmination God's salvation history of fallen men and women.
The psalmist reminds us that when we pray to God, He will hear us and deliver us. We pray for many different things. Some of those petitions are selfish and materialistic, but many times we pray for guidance, strength, wisdom or healing. Jesus hears all our prayers and He answers them.
The psalmist reminds us that our prayers do not fall on deaf ears. God saves His people, time and again. As we draw closer to Christmas we are nearing the birth of God's salvation history personified and enfleshed in His Very Own Son, Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior.
Prayer: O Almighty and Eternal God, Your Son, Jesus, triumphed over the prince of demons and freed us from bondage to sin. Help us to stand firm against every assault of Satan, and enable us always to do Your will; through Jesus Christ, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, One God, now and forever. Amen. (1118, Treasury of Daily Prayer)
