Trinity 16
Jesus said to His twelve apostles: "Behold, I am sending you out as sheep in the midst of wolves, so be wise as serpents and innocent as doves." (Matthew 10,16)
When Jesus sent out His apostles on their first mission of preaching the gospel, He warned them that they would suffer persecution. We face similar treatment from the world today. We face ridicule, contempt and disrespect from some segment in our society. Other Christians around the world, particularly in the Middle East, Africa and China face physical harm and even death for their faith.
This should not surprise us. Jesus also said: "A disciple is not above his teacher. If they have called the master of the house Beelzebul, how much more those of his household." (Matthew 10,24-25) Beelzebul means "lord of the flies" and is a derogatory name for the devil.
And yet, Jesus commands His apostles to preach the gospel. We continue to preach the gospel and support it. The Word of the Lord goes forth, and although it may be mocked, it nevertheless returns after having faith in some hearts and minds.
Yes, this world persecutes us and scoffs at God's Word. Jesus is maligned into every sort of caricature that is a far cry from His loving ministry as our crucified and risen Savior. Yet Jesus prevails, His Word prevails and we prevail. The Holy Spirit watches over us and guides us. He works through us and creates faith when and where the gospel is preached. We take comfort in His work.
Prayer: O Almighty, Eternal God, in the Word of Your apostles and prophets You have proclaimed to us Your saving will. Grant us faith to believe Your promises so that we may receive eternal salvation; through Jesus Christ, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, One God, now and forever. Amen.
