Romans 12,16-21. Epiphany III

Romans 12,16-21 1023

3. Sonntag nach Epiphanias 17

Vincentius, Deacon at Saragossa, Spain. Martyr 304 (Diocletian, 284-311/12; persecution 302-11)

22. Januar 2023

1. Worship Him, all ye angels:

Zion heard and was glad (Psalm 97,7b-8).

O Almighty God, whose Name the nations fear; build up Your Church, so that the nations trust in Your mercy and their rulers praise Your Glory.  Amen. (Psalm 102,15-16 Gradual)

2. »Live in harmony with one another. Do not be haughty, but associate with the lowly. Never be wise in your own sight. Repay no one evil for evil, but give thought to do what is honorable in the sight of all. If possible, so far as depends on you, live peaceably with all. Beloved, never avenge yourselves, but leave it to the wrath of God, for it is written: Vengeance is Mine, I will repay, says the Lord [Leviticus 19,18]. To the contrary, if your enemy is hungry feed him; if he is thirsty, give him something to drink; for by doing so you will heap burning coals on his head [Proverbs 25,21-22]. Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.«

3. Although ridiculed by many, religion is still overall respected in our society. When an emeritus pope dies, much attention was given to understanding the specifics of Roman Catholicism. When an athlete collapses on the field, many encouraged prayer for his well-being and recovery. While people mock and criticize religion, many realize that religion promotes positive attributes in society. Yet religion is only tolerated so far. One is often told not to allow religion to interfere too much in the goings on in the world. When religion crosses paths with the particulars of the cultural Zeitgeist, then it is religion that must yield.

4. Religion intrudes upon us. „By nature we think an eye for an eye. If people are kind to us, then we will be kind to them. If we are kind to others, then we expect them to be kind in return. If we are kind to someone and he or she isn’t sufficiently thankful, we say we will remember that and not let ourselves be so foolish next time“ (Nagel 51 ¶ 10). Fool me once, shame on you; fool me twice, shame on me is a popular expression. „We love and esteem those most who love and esteem us most. That is the way of human love, and at its center is self“ (Nagel 51 p 10).

5. True religion rejects this. In His Beatitudes Jesus teaches: »Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, so that you may be sons of your Father who is in heaven« (Matthew 5,44-45). James says: »If anyone thinks he is religious [θρησκός] and does not bridle his tongue but deceives his heart, then his religion [θρησκεία] is worthless. Religion [θρησκεία] that is pure and undefiled before God the Father is this: to visit orphans and widows in their affliction, and to keep oneself unstained from the world« (James 1,26-27). Paul exhorts us that if our enemy is hungry, then feed him; if he is thirsty, then give him something to drink; for by doing so you will heap burning coals upon his head.

6. „As long as the godless receive anger for anger and self-assertion for self-assertion, they are within the narrow realm that they understand. But when anger is met with kindness and self-assertion is met with a selfless love, they are stumped. That is new, outside their realm of thought and action, and they are shaken by it. The godless will probably try to conceal their defeat behind a callous and mocking bravado. They will try and explain away that kindly love in terms of the selfish reasons that only they understand, but the shaft of your love may have pierced their selfish hearts“ (Nagel 52 ¶ 11).

7. „The coals of fire are the burning pangs of shame that smolder in their selfish hearts as the godless try to forget your discomforting, kindly love. Your love has shown them how ugly their own narrow self-seeking life is. … As our text suggests, it is usually when our enemies are in great need that the coals of love burn hottest on their head“ (Nagel 52 ¶ 12).

8. But let us not stain our love with sin (Nagel 52 ¶ 13). We dare not act in self-righteous judgment and condemnation. Our enemies are people created in the Image and Likeness of God just as are we. They may not recognize this or believe it, but God loves them, wants to save them and create a clean heart in them. Our fervent prayer should be that they come to faith in Christ and share in all the good gifts He wants to bless them with.

9. We also dare not enjoy their discomfort when we do them a kindness and they are shamed by our love that they cannot quite grasp. We must be vigilant that our kindness stems from a heart of love that sincerely desires their well-being. Our hearts can too easily take sinful pleasure at another’s vexation, especially when they still remain a thorn in our side.

10. Jesus exhorts us in His Beatitudes: »Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you. Blessed are the merciful, for they shall receive mercy. Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God« (Matthew 5,44.7-8). Thus the Apostle Peter exhorts us in his epistle: »Keep loving (αγαπην) one another earnestly, since love covers a multitude of sins« (1. Peter4,8).

11. „Let us humble ourselves, putting aside all arrogance, pride, foolishness and anger, and do as the Holy Spirit says: Let not the wise boast in wisdom, but boast in the Lord and seek His righteousness [Jeremiah 9,23-24]“ (Clement of Rome, Epistle to the Corinthians p 13). For Christ has taught us that we overcome evil with good. We lay up our treasures in heaven, for our treasure is where our heart is (Matthew 6,21). Jesus has called sinners and has shown them His mercy (Matthew 9,13). May we bear this merciful heart of God to those in the world who need to see it and hear it.

12. For His great mercy

Upon us always is,

His truth, goodness and mercy

To young and old appears

And endures for eternity,

Gives us salvation out of mercy;

Therefore sing Hallelujah (Lobt Gott den Herrn, ihr Heiden all elkg 295,2 2021 Joachim Sartorius 1591 nach Psalm 117)

This is most certainly true.

13. The peace of God, which surpasses all understanding keep your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus (Philippians 4,7).  Amen.

14. Let us pray. O Almighty God, vouchsafe so to reign in our souls that Christ may have the sole dominion there, that we may sincerely embrace Him with our whole hearts, honor Him with all our faculties, confess Him with our tongues and glorify Him by our works.  Amen. Exodus 33,18-33. Epiphany II

Exodus 33, (17b) 18-33  0923

2. Sonntag nach Epiphanias  16

Maurus, Abbot at Glanfeuil (Saint-Maur-sur-Loire), France 584

15. Januar 2023

1. All the earth shall worship Thee:

And shall sing unto Thee, O God (Psalm 66,4).

O blessed, Lord Jesus Christ, the God who heals and delivers; receive our thanks for Your steadfast merciful love, so that we receive the wondrous works You do for the children of Your Heavenly Father.  Amen. (Psalm 107,20-21 Gradual).

2. »And Yahweh said to Moses: „You have found favor in My sight, and I know you by name.“ Moses said: „Please show me Your Glory.“ And He said: „I will make all My Goodness pass before you and will proclaim before you My Name ‘Yahweh.’ And I will be gracious to whom I will be gracious, and will show mercy on whom I will show mercy. But you cannot see My Face, for man shall not see Me and live. Behold, there is a place by Me where you will stand on the rock, and while My Glory passes by I will put you in a cleft of the rock, and I will cover you with My Hand until I have passed by. Then I will take away My Hand, and you will see My Back, but My Face shall not be seen.“«

3. In the Scriptures, God appears to people at times. This is called a theophany (θεοφάνεια; θεο: god and φάνεια: to show) or an epiphany (θεοφάνεια). In Exodus 33, Yahweh shows Himself to Moses on Sinai. This epiphany involved: 1. Making all His beautiful goodness pass before Moses, and 2. proclaiming His Name: Yahweh. Moses had already beheld Yahweh in the Burning Bush, where God appeared as fire, and told him: »I am the God of your father, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob« (Exodus 3,6). He then tells Moses His Name: »I am who I am«, in Hebrew this is Yahweh« (Exodus 3,14). In Exodus 33, Moses has a deeper manifestation of God’s presence: He sees God not as a pillar of fire but he sees God’s beautiful goodness; this glory however is too intense for a human being to see face to face, so God shows His back to Moses. Connected with this manifestation is God’s Name—Yahweh—I am who I am.

4. Yahweh intended for His people to behold Him face to face, and this manifestation is fulfilled in God the Son becoming incarnate. John writes in his Gospel: »And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen His glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth« (John 1,14). Jesus later tells His disciples: »Blessed are the eyes that see what you see! For I tell you that many prophets and kings desired to see what you see, and did not see it, and to hear what you hear, and did not hear it« (Luke 10,23-24). And what did the disciples and the Jews see? A: They saw grace and truth that came through Jesus who has made known to them the Father (John 1,17.18). For Jesus will later tell His apostles: »Whoever has seen Me has seen the Father« (John 14,9b). What Moses longed to behold was revealed to the people of Jesus’ generation.

5. Are we once again beholding God like Moses did? A: In one sense, yes. Jesus only walked this earth for 3 decades before He ascended to heaven. What the people beheld during those years is not for our eyes to see and ears to hear. A: But in another sense, no. Jesus has left His Church something those of His generation did not have. He had instituted the Sacraments of Holy Baptism and the Lord’s Supper. Through these means of grace we behold the glory of God. „In baptism, the heavens open above us as it was at the baptism of Jesus. We hear the voice of the Father to us is: You are my dear child, in whom I am well pleased. And we receive the Holy Spirit who calls us by the gospel, enlightens and sanctifies with His gifts in the true faith. In, with and under the gifts of bread and wine Christ gives us  His body that was crucified for transgressors to make us both in body and soul into a dwelling place of God. Yes, the New Testament Christians are called the temple of God, and where His people gather is where the gifts of the Word and the Sacraments are given and received“ (Wenz p 33-34).

6. Paul reminds us: »For now we see in a mirror dimly, but then face to face« (1. Corinthians 13,12a). Moses now beholds God face to face. The disciples are already gone to the presence of God. They see the glory of Yahweh openly and fully manifested. We are still dependent on the Word and Sacraments that give us a glimpse of God’s glory, and they assure us that He is present among us and longs to bring us into the fellowship of His heavenly presence.

7. Today we behold the Sacramental glory of Jesus. He gives us His true body and blood in the bread and the wine of His Supper. We behold the God-man who suffered, died and rose again for us in order to save and forgive us.

8. Paul proclaims: »Μαρανα θα. Our Lord has come« (1. Corinthians 16,22). This is our confession of faith. We look forward with hope for our Lord will come again and manifest His full glory.

9. Stay with us, Lord, do not leave us,

Through darkness to light lead us,

Stay with us in this world’s evening

As our Help and Refuge into morning. (Du Morgenstern, du Licht vom Licht elkg 396,4 2021  Richard Adelbert Lipsius 1878).

This is most certainly true.

12. The peace of God, which surpasses all understanding keep your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus (Philippians 4,7).  Amen.

13. Let us pray. O blessed Jesus, who didst dwell in Thy humble home at Nazareth, be with Thy servants in this our home, keep from it all pride, selfishness and impurity that it may be a dwelling place meet for Thy sacred presence; grant us to grow in grace and in the knowledge and love of Thee; guide us throughout our life on earth, comfort us in our troubles, strengthen us in our weakness and bring us at last to Thy home in heaven.  Amen. Matthew 3,13-17. Epiphany I

Matthew 3,13-17 0823

1. Sonntag nach Epiphanias 15

Severin, Apostle of Noricum, † 481

8. Januar 2023

1. I saw also Adonai sitting upon a throne:

High and lifted up (Isaiah 6,1).

O Yahweh, the God of Israel, bring prosperity to Your people, so that we see the righteous, wondrous work of Your hand.  Amen. (Psalm 72,18.3 Gradual)

2. »Then Jesus arrived from Galilee to the Jordan to John, to be baptized by him. John would have prevented Him, saying: „I need to be baptized by You, and do You come to me?“ But Jesus answered him: „Let it be so now, for thus it is fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness.“ Then he consented. And when Jesus was baptized, immediately He went up from the water, and behold, the heavens were opened to Him, and He saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and coming to rest on Him; and behold, a Voice from heaven said: „This is My beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased.“«

3. John’s baptism was with water for repentance (Matthew 3,11). He preached that the kingdom of heaven was at hand (Matthew 3,2). He was preparing the way for the Messiah who would bring this kingdom of heaven. Confession of their sins was how the Jews were preparing themselves for the advent of their Messiah (Matthew 3,6). The Messiah would bring a great reckoning: the unrepentant unbelievers would be judged; the repentant believers would be gathered into eternal fellowship (Matthew 3,12).

4. Lo, and behold, Jesus shows up as the Messiah where He straightaway goes to John to be baptized by him. John expected Jesus to baptize him, for his task is now complete: Messiah is here and will take up the mantle of preaching the arrival of the kingdom of heaven. John would signal this transition by humbly submitting to his cousin who is the Messiah. John must decrease, and Jesus must increase.

5. Jesus says John must baptize Him, for it is fitting for them to fulfill all righteousness. This involved Jesus stepping into the Jordan, and John baptized Jesus with water for repentance. What sort of a Son of God is He who accepts the same baptism that Israel is accepting (Gibbs 178)? What sort of Messiah is He who submits to John’s baptism for repentance? A: a Son of God, a Messiah, who is Israel reduced to one! In His baptism, Jesus is vicariously all of Israel; He is vicariously every Jew and Gentile; He is standing among His people and humbly submitting Himself to the baptism they received from John.

6. To fulfill all righteousness is an activity that is being carried out by both John and Jesus, in the action of John baptizing Jesus (Gibbs 179). To fulfill virtually carries in itself the meaning to enact or participate in the Divine Scriptural plan of salvation (Gibbs 179). In the Psalms (71,2.15-16)  [1] and Isaiah (51,5-8) [2], and in later Jewish literature as well, God’s righteousness refers to the saving deeds that Yahweh performs on behalf of His people, and in that sense it often stands in parallel to salvation (Gibbs, 180).

7. This shows how Jesus will save His people from their sins (Matthew 1,21) (Gibbs 181). It shows how the reign of heaven is now arriving in an unexpected way (Gibbs 181). What began at His baptism is completed at His crucifixion and resurrection. „Jesus’ willing Baptism in the Jordan is a sign that points forward. It is a cruciform harbinger, pointing forward to the hidden and unexpected, shockingly weak and vulnerable in-breaking reign of God, to the paradoxical enthronement of the King of the Jews on the cross“ (Gibbs 181).

8. Jesus has arrived to bring righteousness and salvation to the Jews and Gentiles. So important is this that the entire Trinity manifests at Jesus’ baptism: all 3 Persons, Father, Son and Holy Spirit, are present at the baptism; God is fully and gloriously revealed. The Spirit’s descent and the Father’s Voice proclaimed Jesus to be God’s true and perfect Son and the Servant of Yahweh who has come to save all the world (Gibbs 186).

9. In His baptism, Jesus reveals His righteousness, and yours. God has become man, and He does not shy away from you or your sins. Is there any greater joy, grace or righteousness than this? Is there now anything that Christ would withhold from you? Is there no blessing that Christ would not shower upon you? Indeed, God the Father has sent you His very Son. Jesus is baptized. Jesus is one of you. All that is Christ’s He now gives to you. His righteousness is now your righteousness.

10. Jesus’ righteousness is given to you in Baptism. Jesus’ baptism is vicarious, for sinners, pointing forward to His crucifixion and resurrection in the place of sinners (Gibbs 185). In your Holy Baptism you are joined to Christ and united with Him in His death and resurrection (Romans 6,3-6). In Christ’s death you have died to sin. In Christ’s resurrection you have risen from the Baptismal waters into the newness of eternal, resurrected life. Yes, Christ has saved you in your Baptism. »You are dead to sin and alive to God in Christ Jesus« (Romans 6,11). God the Father’s words spoken to Jesus at His baptism are now spoken upon you: »You are My beloved son, My beloved daughter, with whom I am well pleased.« You are righteous before God, for you stand before Him covered with the pure and holy righteousness of Jesus Christ, and this is your salvation.

11. O Son of grace without decline,

Accept this hymn of praise that’s mine,

That resounding this wisdom raise

To our good and to Your praise. (Du höchstes Licht, ewiger Schein elkg 389,8 2021 Johannes Zwick before 1542)

This is most certainly true.

12. The peace of God, which surpasses all understanding keep your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus (Philippians 4,7).  Amen.

13. Let us pray. O Lord Jesus Christ, we beseech Thee, by the innocence and obedience of Thy holy childhood and by Thy reverence and love for little children, do Thou guard the children of our land, preserve their innocence, strengthen them when ready to slip, recover the wandering and remove all that may hinder them from being brought up in Thy faith and love.  Amen.  »In Your righteousness deliver me and rescue me; incline Your ear to me, and save me! My mouth will tell of Your righteous acts, of Your deeds of salvation all the day, for their number is past my knowledge. With the mighty deeds of the Adonai Yahweh I will come; I will remind them of Your righteousness, Your alone.«

»„My righteousness draws near, My salvation has gone out, and My arms will judge the peoples; the coastlands hope for Me, and for My arm they wait. Lift up your eyes to the heavens, and look at the earth beneath; for the heavens vanish like smoke, the earth will wear out like a garment, and they who dwell in it will die in like manner; but My salvation will be forever, and My righteousness will never be dismayed. Listen to Me, you who know righteousness, the people in whose heart is My law; fear not the reproach of man, nor be dismayed at their revilings. For the moth will eat them up like a garment, and the worm will eat them like wool, but My righteousness will be forever, and My salvation to all generations.“«

Colossians 2,6-13. Circumcision and Name of Jesus

Colossians 2,6-13  0723

Tag der Beschneidung und Namengebung Jesu  12

Circumcision of the Lord, and Name of Jesus

1. Januar 2023

1. O Yahweh our Adonai, how excellent is Thy Name in all the earth!

Who hast set Thy Glory above the heavens (Psalm 8,1).

O Jesus, born in Bethlehem, remember not our sins nor our lawless deeds no more, so that we joyously praise Your Name as our Christ who has kept Your law and testament for us.  Amen. (Hebrews 8,10; 10,17 Gradual).

2. »Therefore, as you received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in Him, rooted and built up in Him and established in the faith, just as you were taught, abounding in thanksgiving. See to it that no one takes you captive by philosophy and empty deceit, according to human tradition, according to the elemental spirits of the world, and not according to Christ. For in Him the whole fullness of Deity dwells bodily, and you have been filled in Him, who is the head of all rule and authority. In Him also you were circumcised with a circumcision made without hands, by putting off the body of the flesh, by the circumcision of Christ, having been buried with Him in Baptism, in which you were also raised with Him through faith in the powerful working of God, who raised Him from the dead. And you, who were dead in your trespasses and the uncircumcision of your flesh, God made alive together with Him, having forgiven us all our trespasses.«

3. Names are important in the Bible and tell us important things about the person and what God does through him or her. Adam : ruddy, man. Eve : source of life, living one. Judah : thanksgiving, praise. Ruth : friend. David : beloved one. Isaiah : Yahweh is salvation.

4. Luke proclaims in his Gospel: »And at the end of 8 days, when He was circumcised, He was named Jesus, the name given by the angel before He was conceived in the womb« (Luke 2,21). Matthew writes in his Gospel: »Mary will bear a Son, and you shall name Him Jesus, for He will save His people from their sins« (Matthew 1,21). The name Jesus translates as Yahweh saves.

4. Circumcision signifies the covenant made between the Abraham and Yahweh. Moses writes: »When Abram was 99 years old Yahweh appeared to Abram and said to him: „I am God Almighty; walk before Me, and be blameless, that I may make My covenant between Me and you, and may multiply you greatly. No longer shall your name be called Abram, but your name shall be Abraham, for I have made you the father of a multitude of nations. And I will establish My covenant between Me and you and your offspring after you throughout their generations for an everlasting covenant, to be God to you and to your offspring after you. As for you, you shall keep My covenant, you and your offspring after you throughout their generations. You shall be circumcised in the flesh of your foreskins, and it shall be a sign of the covenant between Me and you. He who is 8 days old among you shall be circumcised. Every male throughout your generations, whether born in your house or bought with your money from any foreigner who is not of your offspring“« (Genesis 17,1-2.5.7.9.11-12). »And on the 8th day the flesh of his foreskin shall be circumcised« (Leviticus 12,3). In modern Jewish practice, following the circumcision, a prayer is said for the baby in which his Jewish name is used (and thus announced) for the very first time. It is customary for the parents to keep the baby’s name a secret until this time.

5. The circumcision and naming of Jesus 8 days after His birth is an extremely important event. His parents fulfill the covenant and law by circumcising Him. The Apostle Paul explains the significance of this: »But when the fullness of time had arrived, God sent forth His Son, born of woman, born under the law, to redeem those who were under the law, so that we might receive adoption as sons« (Galatians 4,4-5). By becoming incarnate of human flesh in a Jewish womb, the Son of God willingly humbled Himself and placed Himself under His torah to save us, who are under the threats of the law. By being circumcised, Jesus promised and foretold that He would fulfill every precept of the torah in heart, word and deed. At His circumcision, Jesus shed His blood on our behalf in obedience to the law, and He foreshadowed how in obedience He would 3 decades later shed His blood on the cross for us, thereby making full atonement for our sins. In doing so, Jesus fulfills the name He had been given: He saves us.

6. We tend to focus on the salvation Jesus obtained for us by looking back to the cross. He indeed did purchase our forgiveness and salvation on Good Friday, but He was already our Savior doing the work of a Savior even at 8 days old with His circumcision.

7. Just as Yahweh established His covenant with Abraham and his descendants with Abraham’s circumcision so too does Yahweh establish His covenant with us in Jesus’ circumcision. Only when man is in covenant with God does he become free (Ratzinger loc 320). The covenant not only saves mankind but is also meant to draw the whole of reality into communion with God (Ratzinger loc 338). In Jesus, God is our Father, and through Jesus we are brought into God’s family. Now both Jew and Gentile are brothers and sisters in Jesus. The new testament that Jesus brings is an eternal testament because it is grounded upon Him, His shed blood and His atoning sacrifice.

8. Our Baptism is the new circumcision of the new testament. Baptism cleanses us from our sin for it connects us to Jesus’ crucifixion and resurrection. Paul tells us: »In Him also you were circumcised with a circumcision made without hands, by putting off the body of the flesh, by the circumcision of Christ, having been buried with Him in Baptism, in which you were also raised with Him through faith in the powerful working of God, who raised Him from the dead.«

9. The circumcision and naming of Jesus is the 8th day of Christmas on which our Loving God gave to us His only Son to suffer, die and rise again to redeem mankind.

10. Let us on our way go

In Jesus’ name only.

This guiding star will show,

That all will be rightly

And through His mercy

Everything full of blessing be. (Jesus soll die Losung sein elkg 385,3 2021 Benjamin Schmolck 1726).

This is most certainly true.

11. The peace of God, which surpasses all understanding keep your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus (Philippians 4,7).  Amen.

12. Let us pray. Thanks be to Thee, O Lord Jesus Christ, for all the benefits which Thou hast given us, for the pains and insults which Thou hast borne for us. O most merciful Redeemer, Friend and Brother, may we know Thee more clearly, love Thee more dearly and follow Thee more nearly, for Thine own sake.  Amen. (The Circumcision of our Lord, Vespers Collect 2. The Daily Office.)
